Choosing the right ergonomic office executive chair

Working in an office or, as is the current trend, working from home often involves spending a lot of time sitting in an office chair – a position that increases the stress on the structures in the user’s spine. Therefore, to avoid back problems or back imbalances, it is essential to have the right office chair that is ergonomic and supports the lower back and promotes good posture.

There are many types of ergonomic chairs available for office as well as home use. No one type or specific type of office chair is the best, but there are certain things or features that are very important to look for in a good ergonomic office executive chair. These things will allow the individual user to best customize the chair for his/her specific needs or in short. Generally office admins always prefer a chair with some standard features or if budget is not an issue then they prefer only branded ones.

At first considering the “traditional” style of office executive chair, an ergonomic chair has many things including seat height, seat width and depth, lumbar support, backrest, seat material, armrests, and finally the swivel.

The seat height of the office executive chair should be easily and smoothly adjustable. A pneumatic adjustment lever is the easiest way to do this. A typical user seat height of about 16 to 21 inches/40 to 55 centimeters from the ground is required. It helps the user to keep his/her feet flat or parallel to the floor, which is helpful in keeping the thighs and arms horizontal even with the height of the desk.

The width and depth of the seat should be sufficient for any user to sit comfortably. Usually 17-20 inches or 40 to 50 centimeters wide is standard. The room (front to back of the seat) must be sufficient so that the user can sit with his or her back against the back of the ergonomic office executive chair, leaving approximately 2 to 4 inches or 5 to 10 centimeters of space between the back of the knees and the seat. The seat of the chair should be adjustable to tilt forward or backward.
Having a strong or proper support for the lower back is very important in an ergonomic chair. The lumbar spine has an inward curve, and sitting for long periods of time without supporting this curve causes slouching (which flattens the natural curve) and stresses the lower spinal structures. It is very important for an ergonomic chair to have lumbar adjustment (both height and depth) so that each user can get the right pressure to support the inward curve of the lower back.

The back of an ergonomic office chair should be 12 to 19 inches or 30 to 50 centimeters wide. If the backrest is separate from the seat, it should be adjusted in height and angle. It should be able to support the natural curvature of the spine, again with special attention to proper support of the lumbar region. If the office chair consists of a single piece of seat and backrest, the backrest should be adjustable in forward and backward angles, capable of with a locking mechanism to secure it from moving too far back when the user has determined the correct angle.

The seat and back material of an office executive chair should have enough padding to make it comfortable to sit for long periods of time. A breathable textile rich mesh fabric is preferable to a hard surface.

Office executive chair’s armrests should be proper adjustable. They should allow the end user’s arms to rest very comfortably and shoulders to be relaxed. The elbows and lower arms should rest lightly or smoothly, and the forearm should not be on the armrest while typing on laptop or keyboard of desktop.
Any conventional or traditional style or ergonomic chair should easily rotate or swivel so the user can reach different areas of his/her desk without straining or stress.
